Staff Picks: Broadway favorites for 2008

The lights on Broadway were bright as New York City celebrated as the famous ball drop in Times Square, ringing in 2008. With the conclusion of the recent Broadway stagehands strike and general craziness that accompanies the holidays, perhaps now is a great time to pack your bags and check out what’s happening on Broadway.

We have polled the staff here at Broadway/San Diego and are happy to share with you some of our favorite shows currently playing on Broadway’s stages and hitting the road in 2008.

SPRING AWAKENING

Based on the infamous 1891 Frank Wedekind play and featuring an original score by recording star Duncan Sheik and Steven Sadar, Spring Awakening explodes on the stage and pours out over the audience like hormones raging through a sixteen year-old body.

MARY POPPINS

The world's most famous nanny is now one of Broadway's most popular new musicals!
Based on P.L. Travers' cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins - is everything you'd hope for in a Broadway musical - and like nothing you'd ever expect. It's a new musical so extraordinarily enchanting that you'll have just one word for it: "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!"

LEGALLY BLONDE

Sorority star Elle Woods doesn't take "no" for an answer.

So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. The verdict? This much fun shouldn't be legal!

CURTAINS

A tribute to the big, brassy musical comedies of the 1950s, CURTAINS is a savagely funny new musical comedy, starring four-time Emmy Award-winner David Hyde Pierce. CURTAINS unfolds backstage at Boston's Colonial Theatre in 1959, where a new musical could be a Broadway smash, were it not for the presence of its talent-free leading lady.

GREASE

Sandy and Danny are back on Broadway! The fresh new revival of this beloved musical stars You're the One That I Want winners Max Crumm and Laura Osnes. In addition to the smash songs "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightning" and "We Go Together" made famous by the Broadway production, the new revival includes "You're the One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Sandy" from the 1978 film.
