Eligible Productions

Up to 30 eligible high school productions from San Diego County public and private high schools will be accepted to compete in the 2020 BSD Awards. To enter, the production must be a full length musical theater production included on the list of approved shows provided by the The National High School Musical Theatre Awards®. The 2020 list can be accessed here.

Note: If your high school is producing a full length musical theatre production that is not on the approved list, but you believe that it is a good fit for the competition, there is an appeals process for inclusion. Please contact us if this is the case.

 

Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees

High school students currently enrolled in the 2019-2020 school year may be selected as Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees for their portrayal of approved leading roles in participating high school productions. The list of approved roles is provided by the The National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, and can be accessed here.

 

Best Musical Nominees

For the Best Musical category, high school students must comprise at least 90% of the ensemble. A minimal number of supporting roles played by additional younger children or adults is acceptable.

 

Mandatory Workshops and Rehearsals

Best Actor and Best Actress Nominees must be must be conflict free and available to participate in mandatory workshops, rehearsals and events. Rehearsals will be scheduled for evening and weekend hours to be compatible with high school attendance. Teachers and Directors are encouraged to consult with their students and parents to confirm availability before committing them to this process. Exact dates, times and locations TBD.

 

Advancing to the Jimmy Awards®

The Best Actor and Best Actress champions (one male/one female), from the BSD Awards will advance to 2020 Jimmy Awards®/National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®). Nominees are required to travel to New York City to participate in a rigorous week that will include individual coaching and group rehearsals for the Jimmy Awards ceremony.  The Jimmy Awards are presented on Broadway at a Nederlander theatre. Nominees must be conflict free and available for all days during the NHSMTA week (generally mid-June).  Teachers and Directors are encouraged to consult with their students and parents to confirm availability before committing them to this process.

The Broadway San Diego Awards, through the generous support of our sponsors, will provide our two champions with transportation, room and board for Camp Broadway and NHSMTA.  For more information please click HERE.

Nominees understand and agree to all possible videotaping, televised opportunities, photos, press interviews, and print advertising (Waivers are provided in the Participant Information Packet).

In the event that a winner is unable to fulfill his or her obligations to the entire series of competitions, a First Runner-Up may be chosen to take their place.

 

Home-Schooled Students

Home-schooled students are not eligible to participate in the BSD Awards unless they are part of a participating high school musical theatre production.

 

Individual Auditions/Submissions

Individual auditions/submissions to the BSD Awards are not possible. In this Tony Awards® style competition, Best Actor and Best Actress candidates must be nominated for their performance in an approved leading role in a participating high school or school district’s musical theater production.
