WHAT ARE THE BROADWAY SAN DIEGO AWARDS
The Broadway San Diego Awards is a local high school musical theatre competition that features two awards categories.
As the San Diego chapter of the Jimmy Awards® (National High School Musical Theatre Awards®), students that are cast in compliance with the Rules and Regulations of The Jimmy Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, will be adjudicated in their high school production, and eligible to be nominated for The Jimmy Awards. The two finalists from the Jimmy Awards category at the Broadway San Diego Awards will join dozens of other finalists from regional competitions across the country for a weeklong experience called Camp Broadway, which includes rehearsals, workshops, lectures and field trips, designed to prepare the students for The Jimmy Awards®, which will be presented on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre in June 2027.
The 2027 competition will feature opportunities for aspiring musical theatre performers from all over San Diego County with two categories for high schools to enter:
The Jimmy Awards Category
For all high schools producing a full musical. Adjudicators will be sent to each production.
The National High School Musical Theatre Awards® has reviewed the professional standards for identifying the definition of an Approved Musical and a Qualifying Role in an Approved Musical for the purposes of the program. These standards serve as a guide to create a minimum standard and criteria for what defines a Qualifying Role in the category of Best Actor / Actress in an amateur production of an Approved Musical.

As part of The Jimmy Awards (NHSMTA program), students are adjudicated in the category corresponding to their gender identification, not the gender of the role that they played. Students identifying as non-binary or gender-fluid may choose to either select the category in which they wish to be adjudicated (regardless of the gender of the role) OR they may be adjudicated based on the gender of the role they played.
Musicals will need to be adjudicated by Friday, April 23, 2027. If your musical is after this deadline, please email Carlos Martínez at cmartinez@BroadwaySD.com.
The entry fee for this category is $250 per production. SCHOLARSHIPS will be available.
The Best Musical Category
Adjudication for best musical will be completed during the adjudication for the qualified roles for The Jimmy Awards Category. The top 5 schools will move on to compete at the 2026 Broadway San Diego Awards for the Best Musical Category. Students must present a fully staged ensemble production number from the show. It may be a single piece or a medley. Performance may be up to 3.5 minutes in length. Best musical presentations should be done in costume. They should be similar to the costumes from your original production.
Adjudication Process
All schools participating in the Broadway San Diego Awards (BSDA) will have their productions evaluated by a team of experienced local theatre practitioners. Each adjudicator follows a standardized scoring rubric established by the BSDAs, ensuring a fair, consistent, and non-biased evaluation process based on the following criteria: Acting, Singing, Presence & Poise, Movement, Voice, Magic, and Audience Response.
Eligibility Requirements for Best Actors and Best Actress for the Jimmy Awards Category
Student applicants for Best Actors/Actresses must be enrolled in grades 9-12 in a San Diego public or private high school participating in the BSDA’s. Student applicants must be registered by their school and theatre educator they are representing. To compete in the Best Actor or Best Actress category, a student must be in an approved musical and a qualifying role. A comprehensive list of eligible roles can be found at JimmyAwards.com.
Student applicants for The Jimmy Awards Category must agree to possible video recording, televised opportunities, photos, press interviews, and print advertising in conjunction with the BSDA. Students must be willing and available to participate in potential virtual events with the BSDA. If chosen as Best Actress or Best Actor, students must be conflict free and available for all days during the Jimmy Awards week (June 2027).
